Who needs a marine survey? You do! Do you plan on financing or insuring your boat? Have you made an insurance claim on your boat? All of these situations and more may require a boat survey. Pre-Purchase Surveys - Comprehensive inspection when purchasing a new or used vessel to assess the general condition and over all operation of the vessel, including structural integrity, electrical system, propulsion system(s), fuel system, machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics and overall maintenance. Out of water inspection and a sea trial are highly recommended. Market Appraisals - Inspection performed to gather enough information to justify or determine the fair market value of the vessel. Frequently needed for financing, estate and divorce settlements, donations and legal cases. Insurance Surveys - Often called a "Condition & Valuation" survey, insurance companies may require this type of survey to determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk and the fair market value of the vessel. Surveys on older boats are often requirements of insurance. Damage Surveys – Usually ordered by an insurance company to assess the extent of damage, estimate repair costs, and if requested determine the probable cause. You may need one also to protect your own interests.
